A man has survived on the coast of Ireland after being caught in the act of catching a turtle.
The man was spotted at a beach in the County Mayo area of County Kerry around 4pm yesterday.
He was brought to the coastguard station in Clonmacnoir, Co Mayo and later discharged to hospital.
The Coastguard was called to the scene.
The Irish Times understands the man was bitten by a sea turtle, which was captured on camera.
He suffered severe internal bleeding and later died.
The turtle was caught by a fisherman and brought to shore.
The fish was eventually released back to the ocean.
The coastguard did not name the man but he is understood to be a marine biologist with a doctorate in marine biology.
